I've spent the last few years booking my own travel with points, and I like the puzzle: finding the one routing or the one hotel where a balance goes much further than it looks.

Most people with a big points balance don't need a hobby. They need someone to tell them what their points can buy for the trip they're already planning, and exactly how to book it. That's what this is.

I do the searching myself, in paid award search tools, and I write up what I find. Nothing goes in a report unless I saw it available, and every option says when.

A few things I hold to:

• You book it yourself. I never ask for logins or card details.
• I say so when points aren't worth spending, even if that means a refund.
• Hotels count. Most award services only look at flights.
• Everything is in writing, so you can read it when it suits you.
